A young boy was carried today into the community health clinic, transported on his older sisters back. He was hungry, starving and infested with tunga penatrans, jiggers. You probably haven't heard of it right? It's an infection caused by a sand flea that burrows deep under the toe and finger nails and skin of feet (and hands). The sister, very thin and frail and also infected, appeared to be about thirteen. Sister speaking only Kimu reported that mother is always in the forest cutting wood to sell. There was no money and no way for them to pay for food or medical treatment. The boy could not be put down on his feet and it appeared from the level of muscle wasting that he had been malnourished and unable to walk for quite some time. Both children were admitted to the children's ward. The hospital will send someone out to find the mother, will investigate the social circumstances of the family, will spray the home and compound to erraxicate the fleas, then every effort will be made to help this mother adequately feed these children. For now, contributions from our team to the hospital service fund will cover the costs of treating this pair.
